The short version
This is a one-person site about expeditions. It sets no advertising cookies, builds no profiles, and sells nothing to anyone. The only personal information it holds is what you deliberately send me — a message, or an email address for the mailing list.
Everything below is the detail behind that.
Analytics
This site uses Umami to count visits. It sets no cookies and does not track you between sites or across sessions. What it records is aggregate: which pages were viewed, roughly where in the world the visit came from, what kind of device, and which site linked here.
I use it to know whether anyone reads what I publish. It cannot identify you and I could not single you out in it if I wanted to.
Contact form
There are two forms on this site and both are handled by Web3Forms, which passes what you send straight to my inbox.
The contact form collects your name, your email address, the subject you pick from the list, and your message. The speaking form collects your name, your email address, your organisation, the event date, and whatever details you add.
I use both to reply. Neither adds you to the mailing list, and I do not pass any of it to anyone else.
Mailing list
The mailing list runs on Kit. It holds your email address and whether you opened anything I sent.
Every email carries an unsubscribe link and it works immediately. You can also write to me and I will take you off it.
Gear links
Some links on the gear page are Amazon Associates links. If you buy something after following one, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. It does not change what I recommend — the gear listed is gear I have actually used, and where something failed I say so.
Following one of those links takes you to Amazon, and from that point Amazon's privacy notice applies rather than mine. I never see your name, your address, or your payment details — only an anonymous count of whether a purchase happened.
Social platforms
I use the official APIs from Meta, YouTube and TikTok to read analytics and comments from my own accounts — view counts, watch time, audience breakdowns, and the comments people leave on my posts. This is the same information those platforms already show me in their own dashboards; the API just lets me keep a dated copy.
That data is stored on my own computer. It is not sold, not published, not used to contact anyone, and not combined with anything from this website. When comments are quoted publicly — in a sponsor document, say — they are quoted as they already appear in public on the post itself.
If you have commented on one of my posts and would rather not appear in that copy at all, write to me and I will remove you from it.
Embedded video
The episodes page embeds a YouTube player. It uses YouTube’s privacy-enhanced domain, youtube-nocookie.com, which means nothing is sent to Google and no cookie is set while the page simply sits there.
That changes the moment you press play. From then on you are watching a video on Google’s infrastructure, Google may set cookies in your browser, and Google’s privacy policy applies alongside mine. If you would rather not, the same film is linked as a plain link on that page.
Hosting
The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. Like any web host, Cloudflare keeps standard server logs including IP addresses, for security and to keep the site up. I do not use those logs to identify visitors.
Typefaces are loaded from Google Fonts, which means your browser requests them from Google and Google sees your IP address in the process. No cookie is set by it.
This site sets no cookies of its own. The only thing on it that can put a cookie in your browser is the YouTube player above, and only if you press play.
Your data
Write to me and I will tell you what I hold about you, correct it, or delete it. There is no form to fill in and no account to close — ask, and it is done.
